Chiming in a bit late here, but I would definitely like to see the SL rules restrict to only cars that are registered and inspected. If a car isn't registered it isn't legal to be driven on the streets, which would seem to go against the name of the class...

I don't see a purpose for doing this. A few posts back I discussed how trailering in a car is preferable even if it is completely "street legal." Therefore, if trailering in makes sense, why would I register the car for it not to be driven on the street to and from the race?

I think street legal sounds good in theory, but when it comes down to it there just isn't a cost effective way not to strand yourself with your daily driver because the roughness of the ice damaged your suspension or the high RPMs took a toll on your power steering pump or some other component.

I especially don't agree in the SLM class that it should be registered - a caged car is not a daily driver (at least I'm not going to be doing that) and therefore serves no purpose to be registered. For the SLS and SL guys, again I go back to the idea of having the peace of mind trailering it back and forth and it serving no purpose other than to give New York state or whatever state you're coming from my money to just throw away to make it through tech on a technicality and not because the car didn't meet a safety and leak test.

Disclosure: This coming from a street legal racer who does drive his red plastic bucket back and forth to the lakes, registered and inspected.

It sort of depends on what car you are racing.
In my case my car was a daily driver in non ice racing season except when I took it to a track day hundreds of miles away. So I had a trailer and used it in ice racing season.
So, if you have a trailer, no reason to register, no trailer, well.

Since I am no longer racing I have no opinion on the subject.

My opinion (for what it is worth) is that a SL class car should be 100% street legal! Doesn't mean you can not trailer in. I ran SL a couple times. My car was registered/insured & inspected.....BUT I used my trailer to get to & from the races. Then I drove the same car back & forth to work during the week! emoticon

***If this was a proposed rule I would not vote one way or another as i do not race in SL. BUT SL guys should let their voices be heard!!

Right Shannon.
Now is the time for SL racers to speak up.
Next winter will be too late.

The intent of the street legal class was to allow nice street driven cars to be raced wheel to wheel on Ice. There is no Drivers School. You attend a drivers meeting, told where to enter the track and follow the other cars. It sounds for a recipe for disaster.

Guess what? It is very competitive and there almost no issues with contact. Everyone is respectful of the rules.

Why? Because we have been tweaking the rules for many years. This is from the 2018 Rule book.

Street Legal Class
The Street Legal Class is a race venue that allows for cars to be driven to an event,
prepped as necessary, raced, and then driven home. This race format allows for a
wide range of cars to participate. For these reasons it is important to minimize the
potential for car damage from car-to-car contact. It is important for Street Legal
Class racers to understand the “No Contact” rule and the enforcement and
repercussions for failing to adhere to it.
3.1.1. General Requirements
3.1.1.1. Street Legal classes include any original production cars able to pass NYS
safety inspection for street use.
3.1.1.2. All cars must start each season with a neat and clean appearance. The Tech
Inspector and Race Officials can disqualify a car that they deem is not
compliant or acceptable for competition

We disallow any cars the look like they do not care if they have contact. Look at the Street legal field, there are some really nice cars. Some of the nicest ones come in on a trailer. But they all appear to be able to pass a NYS inspection.

Trailering in a car does not give a performance advantage. You cannot win Street legal with money alone. Paul Dudley stomped the SLS class with a stock Corolla which was driven in from Vermont.

SLM appear to be morphing into a class for cars with Rally roots. It is really interesting to see what shows up there.

I do not see the need to any rule changes. The current rules allow for great competition and generates a lot of revenue for the club.
