Re: 2018 AMEC Ice race rules proposals to vote on

The windshield, duh. Why didn't I think of that?
That might be a good spot to actually put as the rule. I've had the entire rear of my car covered in snow/ice after races, so bumper numbers could easily not be visible throughout a race, depending on conditions.
I'll get some made up and I can send what they look like. I don't take my numbers off anyway.
By right do you mean drivers side or passenger? I think the front would be better on the passenger side. The rear doesn't really matter

Speaking of rules.
Can we go back to inverting the field (or top 6 was it?) like we used to? That was way more fun than it was last year when we didn't invert. I think someone said it was something we did that got left out of the rules last year or something, but I'd like to see it get put in

Hi Caleb,

Unfortunately you're a little over a month late to have any rules changed for the 2018 season. However, this is always the 2019 season and it's good for people to know we aim to have the rules for the following season finalized in September so people have time to prepare.

Regarding numbers, the front passenger side of the windshield is very helpful to scoring since that's closest to the scoring vehicle which is usually on the inside of the track as we circle them clockwise.

For inverting the top 6 positions in the SL classes, the best that I'm able to reconstruct history, we approved that rule change mid-year several years ago but it never made it into the official rule book. It always causes some confusion and I forgot the last couple years that it didn't apply to the other classes. Last year somebody pointed out that is wasn't in the rules and it turns out it wasn't!

We discussed the inverting rule during our monthly meetings and the people attending the meetings decided not to propose making it an official rule. This was done mainly on the grounds of it being difficult for scoring and gridding, confusing to racers, and it not making too much of a difference in overall outcome...let me explain. It is challenging for grid because many times the 5th and 6th position people don't want to be in the front row so they need to be grid in a different place, and people have a hard time gridding from memory because the person that finished in front of the isn't necessary the person they'll start the next heat behind.

When reviewing the change in the past I looked at races where we implemented the inverted start. In almost all cases the top 3 made it back to the top 3 positions even when inverted. In many cases these guys were back in the top three positions after the first 3 laps (if my memory serves me right) if it took them longer than 1 or 2 turns! So, based on my review of the effectiveness of the rule it didn't have much of an impact.

Nevertheless, I think it's a great rule! It's frequently hard to pass and slower traffic can definitely slow you down as the leaders increase the gap. Inverting the top 6 has definitely helped me and I think it makes the racing more interesting. It's not fun to have the leader on pole and be way ahead of everyone the entire race.

If people want to open this issue up for the 2019 season make sure to attend the June, July and August meetings where we discuss the rules for the upcoming season.

Yeah, I know. I don't pay enough attention. I'm on board with all the changes.
I was just suggesting ba placement for the front/rear numbers.
I didn't see the inversion rule listed and remembered talking to you about it, so I was wondering if we did anything about it.
That's one of the reasons I like it too, cause I'm actually conservative on the start and usually lose ground to the leader dealing with the slower studded cars. The last 3 head I spent the first 90% of the race chasing down the leader and caught him each time, I jus couldn't make a pass or make it stick. I enjoy starting last after win too on the flip side of that.
I completely understand the scoring and grid issues related to that, so I'm on board with whatever makes for a quicker/easier process.
Now lets just hope for more ice this year

2017 rule book, 5.8.2 xxxxx the top 6 positions will be inverted in the grid.

Since the rule was not voted out,it still exists.

The whole gridding rule is confusing. Sort of like two different circumstances. In some case the six inverting rule is in effect then in other cases it is not.
As I read the rule, the first heat is inverted for the first six in points, the second heat is by finish of the first. the finale is the same regardless of class.
