Towel City Retreading

This company has posted on the classified page that they have a super soft ice racing tire.
I have replied, asking for more details.
It seems that these tire retreaders say they have a great tire but are unwilling to invest in a test. TCR did offer half price.

Read my reply on the classified page.

I agree Dick. Who's going to stump up money on an unknown?
Now if they gave away a couple of sets, and those people started driving around the outside of others they would be over run with orders!!!

In the very least, I'd send a complimentary [or even a loaner] pair of the softest tires he's got to any top 3 SL unstudded class driver and see what happens. You only really need two tires to find out if they are better than anything we run. If after putting two on the front the car oversteers more than before, they're great. If all of a sudden a good handling car won't turn in any more, well then they're not better.

We make 13", 14" & 15". I'm not sure the size cars you run, therefore I don't know what size tires you need. I would be willing to send 4 tires to someone that would be interested in testing them at no charge. This tire is a M&S tread pattern with the super soft compound. Like I said this is more a rubber to ice tire but it can be studded. Normal cost on these tires are around $68 plus frt. but quanity discounts are available. Thanks Brad

Re: Towel City Retreading

Well there is the offer guys. And thank you Brad for such a kind offer. My name is Darryl, this will be my 22 year iceracing this season. I am also the clubs cheif technical inspector. I have been following this thread.

here's what I need to see. A better tire is great for the club. It will increase handling but also increase speeds and we know where that leads. You know my nature, which is not opposed to faster...

Never the less Brad, we would need a pair of tires for the most predominent tire run in SL. Then it would need to be run on a car with a driver who can notice and explain the difference between traction in the bridgestone and the Towel City Tire.

Cost for the tires seem good at $68ea plus shipping. However is that the same for all size tires?

Brad, Once we sort this out you can ship them to New Salem Saab, 2017 Central Ave Albany, NY 12205 and I will mount and balance them for the club on someone wheels and change them if needed to other wheels.

Searching back, did I read they durometer around 20? LMK {just check their website and it does say 20.}

Brad, what is the tread with in inches?
Is there an arch in the tread side wall to side wall or is it more or less flat?
Does the tire carry a DOT rating?

It appears as through the full blown Snow/Ice tire may work. Tractionizing/snipping is not allowed.

That offer is great.
One thing that is a problem with racers, if they are running for points, they don't want to try something that might cost them.

So here is my idea. I would put them on my car, start st the rear of an SL race and see how they perform. This would not have to be every race so as not to conflict with my other duties.
I believe Mike Kamm's car has the same bolt pattern for the wheels. They will also fit some others. 4X100. So they could be passed around.
I think they will fit Phil's car also.
So right there we have three experienced SL drivers. One and maybe two who won't be running for points.
Any opinions ?

Sounds like a plan Richard. I'm in for testing. I could supply the wheels too, because Nissan has the largest center hub hole of all 4x100mm wheels. In other words, Phil's and my Nissan wheels will fit on your Ford, but not vice versa. The size all three of us use is 185/65R-14.

Brad, is this a size you have available?

Mike

185/65x14 comes out to 23.5-24 diameter,if that helps.

If we follow through on this, it should be made clear that we are evaluating the tire and will report our findings to Towel City and AMEC and in no way does it commit us to any further involvement.

That's a good news for all members of the club including SL and SL4 drivers! Lets wait for the test results ! Since we lost our class coordinator , anybody knows what's the latest on Bridgestone for this upcoming season ?
P.S. Some info : 16" rims with 5X100 bolt pattern fits on all any year and any model Subarus including WRX's except STI's.
