I was very surprised today to have seen my first charging station for electric vehicles in an unlikely location. I thought that they were initially only going up in major cities or on the Thruway but the one I saw today was near my neighborhood in rural Wynantskill! It was at the Hungry Fish Cafe on route 66. There was a Chevy Volt plugged into it. It had a credit card swiper and you just plugged it into your electric vehicle. Pretty cool stuff. I'd buy an electric car to drive to work if only they made them for about $10-k but not 40-k!

Third Annual S.M.C.C. Economy Run - June 9th, 2012

This just in from organizer, Jeff Dungen of the Sports Motor Car Club of Montreal.

Image

Click here for the flyer with all of the info.

Saturday, June 9th, 2012.

The Club Smart guys have already pinged me about the event, so we've posted it nice and early to give everyone time to fit it into their calendars.

The rally-style Economy Run will be held on the Saturday of F1 weekend. This should give out-of-towners a good excuse to come up to Montreal. We had a great time two years ago when it also coincided with F1 weekend.

But the big question is, what will Mike Kamm have to show up in to defend his title and beat the 3.89L/100km record he set last year???

Below are the results from 2010 and 2011. Route will again be identical.

2011

2010

The route is identical to 2010 & 2011 allowing comparisons with previous results.

Distance: 198km

Classes:

1. Gasoline

2. Diesel

3. Hybrid

Entry Fee: $40

Jeff

I forgot about that it was so long ago when they called!

In the meantime my wife Jamie bought a 2012 Mazda 3 with the sky active engine and is averaging 36 to 46 mpg with it without much effort at all. New cars are very good too bad I can't fix it if it breaks emoticon

I hear you Dave. The newer cars are starting to really perform now regarding fuel economy.

I am wondering if my efforts in bringing my rusty '97 Metro back into shape are worth it or not. I will be competing against Team Smart Quebec again this year. They are bringing a fleet of Smart cars, 997cc gas and .8 liter diesels. One of them has a remapped .8 liter on biodiesel. The bar will be raised again and it's going to be very difficult to win again this year.

I plan to search out local junkyards in Montreal in case the rusty suspension gives out during the competition and I end up taking the train home. emoticon

Mike, do you have any tentative schedules for AMEC Economy Runs this year? Seeing the nice weather the past couple weekends got me the idea to check :-).

The Montreal one sounds fun and is a good excuse to finally visit Montreal and not just stop at Plattsburg.

I also wanted to ask, do you have a thread about 'cladding' your SE-R? I have been toying with rear wheel cover and kamm back for years and yours came together really nice. Especially the kamm back, I guess you just have some thin plexi glued to the coroplast?

Also I'm sure you've seen these, but you should eventually shoot for this with the Metro: http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1989-geo-metro-xfi-tandem/#photo-863787 :-)

Good to hear from you Chris. I/we have no plans for another event currently. Two events per year [Montreal in June and Williamstown, MA in September] seem to be enough for me these days. I'll keep this thread updated when Steve picks this year's date for the Tri-State event.

No separate build thread, just the pictures and text on page 67 of this thread. I used 1/8" lexan pop riveted over thin aluminum angle from Home Depot. The rest was Gorilla duck tape and some wood screws with home made "nuts" that were nothing more than 1" wide hand cut rectangles of sheet metal with an 1/8" holes drilled into them. I used all kinds of different hardware to mount the belly pan - generally what ever I had around.

I had not seen that before. That was cool!

The new fuel tank is in, and my '97 Metro is nearing completion for next weekend's SMCC Economy Run in Montreal.

I found out an interesting tid bit regarding the gasoline that the province of Ontario sells. Their regular 87 octane gas is E10 just like here in the states. But their 91 octane is only E5 and the 94 octane high test is ethanol free.

This is the site of our halfway check point in Blenheim, NY.

I had occasion to drive by the the site of the Historic Blenheim covered bridge, were we assembled during the halfway point for Economy Run IV. I was not aware that it is gone! I had not heard anything about this before today.

I found this on Wiki:

Carries Vehicles (1855–1936)
Pedestrians (1936–2011)
Locale North Blenheim, NY
Total length 232 ft 0 in (70.7 m)[2]
Opened 1855
Collapsed August 28, 2011

With an open span of 210 feet (64 m), it had the longest span of any surviving single-span covered bridge in the world, although the structure's total length made it second in that respect to the Bridgeport Covered Bridge (233 feet (71 m) long with a 208 feet (63 m) clear span).[3] The bridge, opened in 1855, was also one of the oldest of its type in the United States. It was destroyed on August 28, 2011 as a result of flooding from Tropical Storm Irene.
