Re: AMEC Economy Run events thread

Although not an advertised or formal event, a few of us hard core economy enthusiasts will be meeting at the Fonda Stewarts station next Saturday morning for what could be called Economy Run V. Our usual start/finish spot, Fairway Oil and Gas is under reconstruction and currently closed at the moment.

Ken Snowman from VT, has been busy modifying his gas Jetta to go head to head with my SE-R. Check this out!

Re: AMEC Economy Run events thread

I am making no changes to my SE-R for Saturday, except for removing all of the E10 gasoline from it and switching to ethanol free gasoline. Although it used to be sold in three different stations in the Capital district, suddenly there are none. I had the presence of mind to bring gas cans with me last month when I went to Watkins Glen for the Vintage GP Festival. There is an ethanol free station in Montour Falls, just outside of Watkins Glen. I bought 15 gallons @ 4.09/gal. It is rated at 89 octane.

OK fine, but how do I know the gas I bought out there is really ethanol free? I didn't, so I bought a Fuel Testers ethanol test kit. Tonight I tested the fuel and was very pleased that it is 100% pure, the real deal. Then I tested the E10 that I drained out of my car and sure enough, it tested at 10% ethanol.

I am very pleased with the kit.

AMEC Economy Run "V" 10/22/11

Although not an "official" event, today's economy run outing was as serious as any other event to date. Five cars and drivers participated.

Let me start by saying the weather man was wrong today. They were calling for no rain and temps in the upper 50's. But up in the mountains we had a wet mist requiring wipers. We were driving through wet roads with standing water, and trying to dodge the bigger puddles. It was quite cool up there as well, in the upper 40's. I found out today coming down from Speculator that when you are engine off coasting, you don't have any heat. I was thinking about possibly holding a winter economy run, but not any more!

Image
Carter drove the 1993 Honda Civic Del Sol S this time, and Gabrielle drove her 2005 Honda Pilot. Both achieved new personal bests despite the inclement weather. The Del Sol's best was 49 mpg and Carter coaxed 51.75 mpg out of it. Gabrielle's Pilot normally gets 21 mpg but she hypermiled it all the way up to 34.44 mpg today. It's so cool to see a gal out there hypermiling with us, and taking it as seriously as we do!

Image
Ken Snowman and his son Burt brought their heavily Ecomodded 1990 VW gas Jetta over from VT with it's new boat tail. This thing is wild! Unfortunately, a State Trooper noticed this unusual looking vehicle and decided to turn around and follow Ken closely for over 15 miles! This did not help Ken's concentration and he elected not to do any coasting during this time. In the end he also improved from last month's 53.51 mpg, but was was disappointed with his 57 mpg today.

I neglected to get a picture of Richard's blue Ford Fiesta, but he was able to get 52.25 mpg from it! His onboard computer read 51.2. Very nice job Richard! It was great to see Mr. Vedder come out and run his new car with us.

I was really hoping to break 80 mpg today, but in the end I waited too long for the second attempt. It was almost 40 deg. cooler than at the Tri-State 6 weeks ago and it was wet. So the benefits of having ethanol free fuel and a more fuel mileage friendly course were nullified by the wet roads and cool temps. I improved just a bit from 76.04 to 76.90 mpg. Oh well, that's as far as I'm going with an SE-R. All of that cladding will come off tomorrow and we're back to rallycrosing. Thanks to Dave Burnham, I now have a Geo Metro to play with next year. emoticon

Here are a few more pics I took today:

It's hard to see in this picture, but the fuel level is right to the top of the flapper. This is the method I use. The others were using the clicking off method. I'm glad I have an older car and can top off like this.

On my way home I decided to see what I could get driving the car "normally", or what some would call "real world" driving. So without any coasting or other tricks, I cruised at a steady 50 mph on the Thruway.

I was able to get 50 mpg. Not bad for a two liter Sentra. emoticon

50mph on the thruway ? Wonder you didn't get run over.
On Friday afternoon, I drove from Richfield Springs to Johnstown via Rt 20, 10,5 and 30A.
Driving 60 mph when I could, my Fiesta got 45+mpg.

One of the Ecomodder guys was nice enough to photoshop a side view picture of my car to check it's profile against the "ideal" aerodynamic template.

 Image

They said it was very good for an "eyeball job". I didn't measure any angles. I just went with what looked right. The bottom side is spot on, but the top of the roof extension panel could be radiused somewhat and raised a bit to make it perfect.

I am pretty encouraged by what an aerodynamic specialist on Ecomodder said about my car today.

"I photo-enlarged your photo and did a Template overlay. From a 1993 Sentra road test, it looks like your car is 53.9-inches in height (unladen), and 170.3-inches length. To get the roof extension to the Template would require raising it around 4.6-inches at the top trailing edge. Also,it looks like the valence/diffuser could drop about 2.6-inches ( unless that would risk a ground-strike). With your roof extension, you're at 33% aft-body,same as Prius II @ Cd 0.26.

The Daimler-Benz "bionic","boxfish",@ 32% aft-body is Cd 0.19.
Kamm's best car,@ Cd 0.25 had 38% aft-body.

So you're scratching at some tasty Cds now."

I like the sound of that! emoticon

With the prediction of $5 a gallon gas this summer, I would say that it is likely to be an exciting year for hypermining and economy run competitions.

In addition to a Geo Metro that I have added to my fleet of fuel efficient cars, now a two wheeler will likely be joining the mix as well.

This could be the year I will break 100 mpg. emoticon

If anyone is interested I am selling my 1991 VW Eco Diesel. It runs well has 227,000 miles on it and doesn't use any oil. I got 62 MPG without trying very hard on one of the economy runs. $1200 or best offer.
Call me for more details. 518 875 6956

Interesting. What will you replace it with Dave?
