Lol Mike, good show! With a setup like that, I'd be worried about the coolant temps, but with the rain and temperature tomorrow, you should be fine. emoticon

Thanks Ernie,

I've got a razor blade in the console to open up the air intake a bit if I need to. But I read that auto engineers and designers have to design cars to operate in all types of conditions, including towing a trailer on a 120 deg. day in Death Valley with five people in the car. So the factory cooling ducts are much larger than the majority of average drivers will ever need.

Oh, I had to buy a new tire pressure gauge today as well. My old one only went to 50 psi. My front donut tires are rated for 60 and I *might* have even gone higher than that. emoticon

What a great event!

Image Photo: Jamie Burnham with Ron Kienhuis' camera [Thanks Ronny!]

Do these guys above look like they had fun or what? Note those clouds looming on the horizon, [more on that later].

Image
Claude Hutchings Jr. is being supervised by Dave Burnham during the morning fuel top off. Claude Jr. and Sr. came out on just 3 hours of sleep after a late night [and Jr's first Sportsman win!] at the races on Sat. night.

Image
Ron Kienhius brought out his very heavy AWD Subaru SVX. He got 30 mpg with it! A personal best mpg for that car. emoticon

Image
You didn't think Dick Vedder would miss an A.M.E.C. event did you? Of course not. He arrived with his pristine Ford ZX2 S/R ready for battle.

Image
These were the gas prices at Fairway Oil. The diesel price was $5.01 I believe. The high price of diesel did effect the outcome of the "Best Miles per Dollar" award though. That award went to Mark Long in his Dodge Avenger! I forgot to snap a pic of Mark's car but it is seen 4 pictures above [behind the yellow Sonnett].

Image
Immediately following the fueling, each car was weighed with the driver. Dave Burnham's thrifty 1991 turbo diesel Jetta had the best mpg of all of the cars by a good margin.

Image
Remember the looming rain clouds I spoke of? Frankly I did not expect either of the two motorcycles to show up. I was wrong! Ernie Yue was determined to make this event and did exactly that. He even had a strawberry cheesecake [for the picnic afterwards] on board! I have to take my hat off to Ernie because about 20 minutes into the event, we had a lengthly torrential downpour! Although totally soaked to the skin, Ernie never stopped smiling and had not a single complaint. My kind of guy! Oh and yes, he was the top dog on overall fuel mileage. I'll let Dave Burnham or Bryon post the detailed results.

Image
There was only one vehicle that could not be weighed. Mike Glock's 454 Chevy Suburban greatly exceeded the capacity of the Longacre electronic scales. We used the weight listed on the registration at 6,420 lbs! emoticon Did he win the worst mileage award? You betcha. How about 11 mpg!

Sorry for the teasers on who won what, but it's best to wait until the real results get posted. They are very interesting indeed. How did the Protege do? Don't ask. The cardboard areo package fell apart in the downpour. I've got a lot of work to do to that car if I want to beat these guys. For one thing, the auto trans has got to go!

The bottom line though, is that I had a great time. Isn't that what really matters? emoticon

It was an intersting event. We started in sunshine, ran into a torrential down pour for what seemed forever. When he got to Piseco the ran and let up and when we got to Northville it hadn't rained at all. After our event ending stop in Mayfield, we whatched a vey ominous cloud move in and shortly after the rain came. Again.
I had fun inspite of the weather.

Yes, there was a picnic. Inspite of the lousy weather there was a good turnout. The rain finally tooka break and we were able to squeeze in a boat ride with Mike Kamm piloting. If anyone was hungry, this was the place to be. The food just kept comming.
Lots of bench racing went on. A good time as usual.
Congrats to Claude Jr. Onward and upward.

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th

I had a lot of fun at the picnic. Many thanks to Subiks for letting us come to their camp again this year it is a lot of work for them to put the picnic on and we all appreciate it a lot.

Some comments on the Economy Run, I had a lot of fun working with Bryon setting it up and had an equally good time running in the event. It was a very low stress event to arrange and participate in. It was also a very great learning experience for a lot of us on how economical; driving methods and car preparation can be.

Hopefully Bryon will be able to figure out how to put the spread sheet up on the message board so everyone can look at the results because in some ways they were very interesting.

We drove 106.3 miles on some really great roads. Fortunately there was little traffic and we could for the most part really get into a rhythm for driving economically. I personally got the best MPG ever in the VW Jetta. 56 MPG the fact that there were only 3 or 4 stop signs on the route meant you could glide and practice a lot of different strategies for getting good MPG. On my car I pumped the tires way up which allowed it to roll a lot farther/faster with less drag. I also cleaned my air filter and installed a turbo boost gauge. I didn't even know if my cars turbo worked but it does it maxes out at 8 PSI and I tried to never go over 5 PSI. We also coasted as much as possible and I did the trick of speeding up to 60 miles per hour and then coasting until we got to about 50 then doing it again. I think it worked!

Some other observations.

Ernie it was awesome for you to come on the Motorcycle with the rain we were predicted to get. That’s a guy that really wanted to do the economy run on the bike because he could have easily taken his car way to go Ernie!

Mike Glock kept up his biggest badest fastest persona in tact driving a big Block Chevy suburban and starting last in the event. He left 18 minutes after the first car out and immediately put the hammer down totally obliterating any chance of getting good gas mileage to try and get the fastest time of the day (had to get good mileage too to get a trophy though) he finished the run first about 2 minutes before the first car that left, that’s really booking! He accomplished his mission hitting 100MPH while passing the Hutchings in the Sonnet and then passing every participant. Mike keeps the all American dream alive.

Mark Long pulled out an amazing run in his Dodge Avenger a really heavy car with a 5 speed stick. He was the slowest on the day and drafted only inches away from the rear bumper of Ronny Kienhius in the Subaru for miles and miles. All this paid off in getting him I think over 40 mpg. He also got the best Ton MPG award. And after all the calculations were done he actually spent less money to go the 106 miles then I did with the 56mpg Jetta because gasoline is a dollar or more less per gallon. That really makes you stop and think doesn't it. If you had a choice to buy any car right now what would you buy?

Mike Kamm is always special and as usual he did what we expect of him he was innovative and clever and the only thing that hurt his chances in the Mazda was it has an automatic and I don't think you can ever really get outstanding mileage with an automatic. His use of space saver spares for tires and the aero mods were great; too bad the rain tore off the cardboard.

JR and SR Hutchings in the Saab Sonnet didn't have a chance the engine wasn't idling well so JR had to keep pumping the gas and they couldn't put it in freewheel which would have been great to use. JR just won his first Sportsman Modified win ever Saturday night and I am not sure he would know how to get good gas mileage especially after winning only 8 hours earlier with 3 hours sleep!

Ronny Kienhius came in his Subaru SVX a big heavy all wheel drive car and he managed a personal best of 30 MPG with that that’s really good for one of those.

Thanks to the others that came and participated too it was a great event. If we do it again we talked about putting up a prize if anyone can get to 65 or 70 MPG in a normal car (not a hybrid)

Re: AMEC Picnic and Economy run August 10th

Thanks for the nice write up Dave. emoticon

Here's one more pic which shows the thought that went into this event. After each car's tank was filled, Dave "sealed" the filler of each car with a red label across the gas door.

Image
We didn't realize it until afterwards, but if any of us tried to peel it off to add fuel during the contest, the sticker would have left the above tell tale evidence of it.

Did anyone check Mark Long's sticker after the event? emoticon
