Re: AMEC Economy Run series

It appears Mike Kamm has been busy. I got a video of his new gas mileage car. Special tires, small frontal area and a 3 gallon gas tank. This one does not even have an alternator.

Too funny! That was the worst mileage car I have ever owned. It burned 2 gallons of methanol per quarter mile. emoticon

AMEC Economy Run IV Announced!

Image
Here are the details for Economy Run IV:

What: Fuel mileage contest through Montgomery, Schoharie, and Schenectady counties of NY. The route will be on very scenic and less travelled roads, and will run approximately 108 miles in distance. Your “economic” driving ability will be tested. Cars will be filled with fuel by an AMEC official and be sent off at one minute intervals. There will be a time limit to complete the run. Any street legal vehicle is allowed to participate, [including motorcycles].

Where: The start and finish will be at the Fairway Oil gas station on Route 5 in Fonda, NY. The physical address is 40 E Main St, Fonda, NY 12068. Take NY Thruway Exit 28.Take NY Thruway Exit 28. After the toll booth, turn left onto Riverside Drive. Then turn right onto South Bridge Street and go over the bridge. On the other side of the bridge is a traffic light. You can see Fairway Oil and Gas on your left. Turn left onto Route 5 and enter the station.

When: Sunday, November 1, 2009. Arrival time will be 8:00-8:30am, first car off at 9:00am. They have gas and diesel and have a large enough parking lot that we won’t be in the way.

Cost: $10 per vehicle to cover the awards.

Awards include:

1. Best overall mpg for gas cars [1st, 2nd, and 3rd places]

2. Best overall mpg for diesel and hybrid cars [1st, 2nd, and 3rd places]

3. Best Historic car ['79 and earlier - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places].

4. Best overall mpg for Street Legal Class ice race cars.

Awards and Lunch: This event will conclude about 1:00 pm, and our plan is to proceed up the nearby Checkers Out Go-Kart track for lunch, awards, and optional indoor go-kart races if you so desire. Checkers Out Speedway is an indoor go kart track open year round, and is located about ¾ of a mile south of Johnstown, NY, on NYS Route 30A. Physical address: 2299 State Hwy 30A Johnstown, NY 12905. Track phone: 518 736-4630. Remember to bring a helmet if you will be racing the karts after lunch.

To register for this event: Please contact Mike Kamm at (518) 674-0520 or via email: mikek [at ]icerace [ dot] com. Or just simply reply to this thread with your name, year/model car. Registration will be limited to the first 25 drivers.

Re: AMEC Economy Run series

I also wanted to let everyone know about some new details for this event:

1. Filling: We will be starting and finishing at the same station this time. We want our results to be as accurate as possible. So we will be making sure that all cars use the same pump for both fills, and must be facing the same direction while doing so.

2. Mileage verified: This will be an all new course and it is possible that someone could short cut the route, so odometers will be checked before and after, to verify mileage. If your odometer doesn't work or is grossly inaccurate, please contact me before the event.

3. Weather: Previous events have always been "rain or shine." Let's face it, no one will want to be doing this during an all day soaker in November. I will be watching the forecast closely and will make a decision 3 full days before the event. I don't mind a scattered shower, but if it is predicted to be a steady rain all day, I'll let you all know so the few of you that have a motel room booked can cancel without penalty. Rain has never stopped one of our events yet, and I don't expect to have to cancel, but you never know.

Re: AMEC Economy Run IV - November 1st, 2009

You guys remember the dark red CRX of Ben Jones that got 82 mpg at the last event less than a month ago? Well that wasn't good enough so this is what it looks like now.

Image
Get this, he is removing his VX swap for an even wilder transplant. How about a complete Honda Insight hybrid conversion! This is NOT an easy swap. Nothing is a bolt in. The mounts, the axles, the wiring, everything is a challenge - but he making progess. Can he get it done in time for November 1st. I'll bet he will!

There is an entire build thread on it here: Project IRX.

It's not too surprising that the vintage entries are lacking a bit for a November event. But Jonathan Bartlett just emailed me and said that if the weather is rain free, he will help out our sagging Historic class entries by bring his Sonett back again, instead of his Cabrio.

Re: AMEC Economy Run IV - November 1st, 2009 + Go-Karts

I want to say that I dont care if it is raining or snowing for that matter. I will dress for the weather and hopefully we will have the eco run. Certainly 80 and sunny would be nice.

I admire your enthusiasm Chang! If it snows I'll run my Blizzaks and we'll see who finishes the course in the least amount of time. emoticon

AMEC Economy Run Series

Firsts, every event has them.

Economy Run I was the first A.M.E.C. event of it's kind since 1954.

Economy Run II saw the first diesels over 70 mpg and gas cars to eclipse 60 mpg.

We saw the first 100+ mpg results in Economy Run III. I don't think anyone was expecting that. Especially from a four wheeled vehicle.

While much less significant, Economy Run IV will have the first roll bar equipped vehicle in competition. emoticon

Can anyone name any other firsts regarding our Economy Run events? Factual or humorous, fire away!

NEW: Street Legal Class Announced

So we now have 3 Street Legal class ice racing cars signed up. I'd like to see a few more.

So, in lieu of a motorcycle class at this late fall event, I am announcing the formation of a Street Legal ice racer class. Any other SL drivers out there who'd like to show how good all-around their car's are?

Economy Run IV is now recognizing a class for you.

#1 SL Dick Vedder
#7 SL Mike Kamm
#24 SL Ernie Yue
