Economy Run up in Montreal. Organizer Jeff Dungen has put together a very nice promotional pre-event video below. If I don't have an EV before then I will use my Metro again but honestly, I like to try a different car every year. I have been trying to contact someone at both Mitsubishi America and Canada to see if they have a pre-production or Press 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage to loan me, but haven't gotten very far. For those who aren't aware, the new Mirage is a 1.2 liter, 3 cylinder car that is the highest rated non hybrid gas car at 44 mpg. Some call it the modern version of the Geo Metro. It is due to go on sale in November.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mike Kamm)Sun, 12 May 2013 06:45:59 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p305752,from=rss#post305752https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p305752,from=rss#post305752 The Green Grand Prix is coming up shortly on Friday, April 19th. One that I question is the one on AC use. I find that on my Fiests it has little if any effect. I suppose that it might depend on conditons and how hard the AC has to work. So i guess it depends on if you like the wind in your hair and ears, heat a humidity, drive ith the windos open. If yoy like the quiet of a nicely Air conditioned car. Use it. "I had an awesome time all around on this rally. It really is great being able to talk about mods, statistics, and plans for the vehicle in real time and have the people you are talking with actually be interested in what your talking about. The Jetta, however, found things a bit more difficult. So far things are looking a bit off, mechanically. Over the weekend I used a gallon of antifreeze, two quarts of oil, lost both my front smoothies [wheel covers], blew the right front strut, and lost 3 (so far) screws on the belly pan. This rally is challenging though, and top mpg numbers are not achievable when you're rushing up steep hills to stay on time. I called this one right didn't I? Some of you might remember Darin when he came to our Economy Run III event in 2009 with his Pontiac Firefly and got 106.12 mpg with it! From the ecomodder thread, here were some comments from Darin about his ride home: "I've never driven the car that hard before this weekend, and probably won't again until next time. Driving styles, for comparison: 76 mpg US (3.1 L/100 km) in spirited rally driving in the event; 98 mpg US (2.4 L/100 km) on the return from Montreal this afternoon, driving the speed limit on the scenic, flat route (ideal for lean burn!) on a perfect weather day (the usual head wind was AWOL)." nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mike Kamm)Mon, 11 Jun 2012 12:27:35 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304151,from=rss#post304151https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304151,from=rss#post304151quote:itjstagame wrote: Of course the only other economy run was AMEC Eco Run (#2 I think) and thought it was strange that there was no scales and no designated 'official' gas tank filler :-). He was just saying that the only other event he participated in was our Economy Run 2, so he was expecting th event to be run the same way. Chris, you did not miss any scales. Jeff [of SMCC] had a spot on the entry form where we were asked to list the factory weight of our cars. He used that for calculation of the par/per tonne category. No, they did not weigh the cars. In retrospect, yes it would have been best to list the weight of your car as it participated. I don't pay much attention to the ton/mile aspect of these events. I'm more interested in the raw mpg numbers.quote:itjstagame wrote:Good job to you, can't wait to see what kind of mods you add to the metro before MA. Like you described, it is extremely challenging and our best mpg numbers will never be seen with the SMCC's road rallye/economy run format. And regarding your pm, yes I do still have the course instructions for the two AMEC event courses we've used in the past. They were indeed higher speed courses and would give the big numbers we all like to see. In fact we had an informal gathering last October to run the old Fonda-Speculator-Fonda route. We could/may do it again if enough interest is there. But it would be best to do it in August/Sept though, as October was already cool enough to cost us some mileage.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mike Kamm)Mon, 11 Jun 2012 10:31:35 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304149,from=rss#post304149https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304149,from=rss#post304149On our first economy run we did have scales and weighed every car (truck). The family was great for the event, but by the end of it everyone needed to eat and needed a break, and when I saw I'd used over 10L of fuel, I just figured, whatever I'll check the results online. Sorry I didn't have a chance to hang out at all, but I am glad I came and participated. I certainly did not expect the roads to be what they were. There were at least 2 entire sections that my goal was to avoid pointy rocks and not try to bottom out. There was one section of nicely packed dirt that I rally'ed it up a bit too :-), but I mean those mixed gravel/broken pavement/randomly large rocks sections near the middle-end. Oh well. Oh well, to start off, I didn't get to a pump until 4 mins before my leave time. Then I could not get it to take my pay, so had to go inside. I left 2 mins after my start time. I knew the course was in km, but had never driven based on km, so I was like, .5 km, that must be a ways up. So I went straight past the first turn. Then I back tracked, took it and my navigator kept telling me there was somekind of right I needed to take, so not recognizing anything and not wanting to throw the entire day I went back to the gas station and started over ! The 2nd time leaving I left 8 mins after my start time, plus all the extra fuel used going back and forth at those few lights. That left me a little shook up for the first section, with only mild gliding. And then at the end of that section, I passed the control car, went a little ways passed him (since engine was off and I had momentum), well by the time I got to his car, he gave me my time, added 1 minute to THAT time and told me I should have left 3 minutes ago. I have no idea why I thought engine off at a control stop that I would be able to take it easy to get my out time and leave. Needless to say that made me 3-4 mins late on the 2nd section and every other control stop I ran back and forth to the control car. I have no idea how some people managed no penalty, I mean even parking right near the control car and running back and forth there was only ONE time that I didn't have to leave immediately upon getting back in to my car. I'm not complaining, I just will know better for next year, but do think its kind of strange to give the driver an out time that has passed, but the only things I have to compare it too are TSDs I ran while at RPI and maybe I did it wrong by using the current time as an out-time back then. The only other issue I ran in to, as I said, were the couple poor road sections, I was kind of surprised that the worst sections were at a speed ratio of 87% and the last 2 sections of flat, smooth countryside had a speed ratio of 74-77%. And there were a couple times that a road was clearly 50km/h but the course told me to go 80km/h and at the speed ratio I knew I was just getting penalties. The only last issue I had, which you probably missed, but there was a Sunday driver right around section 6/7/8. It was right around the particular narrow road section that was always either 60-70% grade straight up, or down at a right turn angle (I know a lot of the course had this kind of stuff, but this was a particular section with about 20 mins straight of it that every turn was pretty much blind), well they wanted to go 40km/h (which is reasonable for the road) but I had to go 80km/h. There was one other rally car in front of me that go stuck (duck nose) and was able to pass on a blind corner, but with the family I just couldn't. I eventually passed them and then at the start of the next section some how they were in front of me again! Anyway, I hope that doesn't seem like complaining because the whole family had fun. After a couple sections of getting used to navigating and the always being late thing, we got in a groove (until the terrible road sections, where everyone was stressed about bottoming out), and by the last 3 sections we were doing excellent and even had time to sight see while EOC and everything else. The last 2 sections of 70-100km/h farmland/smooth countryside is (for some reason) what I was picturing a lot of the course would be like, my scan gauge said I was averaging 60mpg on those sections. Those sections gave tons of time and they were smooth as could be. My actual MPG for the course was 42.34mpg or 5.55/100km, with missed turns, etc I guess, I don't know, but I know for a fact I went 126.6 miles and used 11.3L. Anyway, I knew I wouldn't be a contender, but I am still extremely happy overall, considering the above conditions and first time driver/navigator and family in the car, not to mention, even on 'smooth' roads there were at least 3 times I was in 3rd gear going 10mph up a hill, full out, hoping I'd get to the top :-). And considering average course speed was about 30mph (took 4 hours) and my city epa is 23mpg, I am very happy. I am surprised a couple smart cars beat me, for some reason I thought they were only rated at like 35mpg and was really looking forward to beating them with the car-full in my 15 y/o beater, oh well, 6mpg off of them isn't too bad. I hope it wasn't too weird that I showed up as last car and then disappeared, but even as is, I didn't get back to home (we ended up not staying in Canada) until almost 11pm. Average on the way home was 39mpg on thruway, because I was blasting A/C to make family happy. See you at the next one, maybe with at least a few less kids :-).nondisclosed_email@example.com (itjstagame)Mon, 11 Jun 2012 08:04:27 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304145,from=rss#post304145https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304145,from=rss#post304145Looks like fun Mike thanks for the report, and its great to see the Geo worked out well! I couldn't have been more pleased with second overall in my stock Metro. I was really fortunate again this year to have David Wood as my navigator. His quick math with mileages got me out of quite a few jams. When we started the rally we immediately realized the route instructions were in kilometers and my odometer was in miles. Duh! Some quick math was required and John didn't miss a beat. More quick math was needed later on because I kept forgetting to reset the odometer at the check points. Luckily, nothing rattled John! The nice thing about this event is that it uses the same route each time so you can compare your results from year to year. My raw mpg results to date: 2010 - 2.0L '93 Sentra SE-R: 57.74 mpg 2011 - 1.4L '77 Datsun B210: 60.40 mpg 2012 - 1.0 L '97 Geo Metro: 64.43 mpg. Due to road construction there were a couple of twisty road sections where that were unpaved. They were a dry dirt and gravel surface and they were fun! I found out that the FWD Metro can drift like a rally car. Too funny! There is more good news, participation for this event was up again this year. The number of vehicles competing: 2010 - 6 cars 2011 - 10 cars 2012 - 16 cars Parked next to Ken Snowman's wild 1990 gas powered "FrankenJetta". My trip home yielded 55.2 mpg at between 55-60 mph on the Adirondack Northway. This was my first Metro experience and I loved it. There is navigation to do at this event. The route isn't a walk in the park like the AMEC events were. The rally is 123 miles, that's after you have driven the 6 hours to get there. I have no idea how I missed it. Thank you. 11h00 : Enregistrement & Ravitaillement / Registration and Fueling 11h45 : Réunion de pilotes / Driver's Meeting * * * 12h00 : Voiture "0" / Car "0" Anyway, it's still tentative as it would be about a 6 hour drive for me from CT and also if I can get the children watched, but it sounds like a good excuse to go to Montreal for the first time. The car is here: EcoModder Garage Doesn't look like much but I averaged 43MPG from CT -> MS 2 weeks ago. I got less coming back because the family required A/C. I don't usually EOC and usually drive on 55MPH highways so I'm hoping with the slower roads and some EOC to hit 50 at least. Also, my wife really wants to come too, so I will probably bring her and my 4 month old (unless you have any suggestions about why that would be a bad idea). I already looked at tickets because I had no idea F1 was so close and would love to see it, but for some reason Sunday only tickets were a LOT more than the other days and with the family it doesn't make much sense, but I lost a few hours yesterday watching F1 vids on the Montreal course.... The street festival sounds great. My wife has never left the country and I've never been to Canada so we're hoping to spend the evening and Sunday getting as much of a feel for the place as we can. I've visited europe once, a few years ago and fell in love with the design and layout of the roads and citys (walking-centric - lost 30lbs in 3 months while eating/drinking(lived in Germany) myself silly) and economy/efficiency mindedness, so I'm very curious to see what a similar mentality did with 'new' construction (ie. cities that aren't 500 years old).nondisclosed_email@example.com (itjstagame)Tue, 05 Jun 2012 11:12:11 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304108,from=rss#post304108https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304108,from=rss#post304108Those sticky tires don't work very well on grass. nondisclosed_email@example.com (zx2 2000)Tue, 05 Jun 2012 08:43:55 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304107,from=rss#post304107https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304107,from=rss#post304107quote:Mike Kamm wrote: The last [and only] time I've ever been to a GP race was in Montreal in back '89!  I was there in '89. There is some good in car footage of Jeff's Levin during some high paced coasts. I had won overall in my '93 SE-R at 57.74 mpg. At the end of the video Jeff asks me if the car is stock and I had to stop and think about it, because my other '91 is all gutted and lightened. But other than an ignition cut switch, and synthetic oils, there wasn't anything else done my full weight '93.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mike Kamm)Mon, 04 Jun 2012 22:36:20 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304105,from=rss#post304105https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304105,from=rss#post304105Hi Mark, it is up in the air whether we will go the next day. I'll go with the flow of what the others in the group will do. I know that we plan to enjoy the evening street festival in old Montreal again this year, with the live bands, fireworks, and classic cars on display. Should be a bunch of Teslas and EV's as well. From what I've seen the past two years, people in the city of Montreal pay much more for gas than we do, so many of them are economy minded. Fuel efficient cars are everywhere. The last [and only] time I've ever been to a GP race was in Montreal in back '89!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mike Kamm)Mon, 04 Jun 2012 22:18:16 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304104,from=rss#post304104https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304104,from=rss#post304104Mike,   Are you going to go to the F1 race? You really should go once. IT is unbelievable how fast and how good they sound. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mark Long)Mon, 04 Jun 2012 19:32:08 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304103,from=rss#post304103https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304103,from=rss#post304103quote:itjstagame wrote: I don't see anything on their flyer about pre-registration, I also don't see anything about a start time or any times. The event registration start time is at a very comfortable 11:00 am. The event starts at noon. The triangle won't be necessary for this event. Yes you can simply show up the morning of the event if you wish, but you can also pre-register here. What would you be bringing? nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mike Kamm)Mon, 04 Jun 2012 12:09:21 +0000 Re: AMEC Economy Run events threadhttps://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304102,from=rss#post304102https://bamecmessageboard.runboard.com/p304102,from=rss#post304102Wow, for some reason I really thought that this was this past weekend and I was unable to make it.... hmmm... Dave, I don't see anything on their flyer about preregistration, I also don't see anything about a start time or any times. Is it ok to show up day of race and register then or is there a way to preregister? Also do you know when the race starts, I would want to get there early if coming from out of town. And lastly, do you just need a safety triangle somewhere in the car or "Your safety triangle must be at hand's reach. " So like by the hand brake or something? Sorry about the questions, I know you did not organize this but was hoping you'd have some insight since you went last year. Thanks, Chrisnondisclosed_email@example.com (itjstagame)Mon, 04 Jun 2012 08:08:55 +0000
