I agree. Who knows, maybe that how they picked the name "Kenny" for baby Kenny Marshall? emoticon

Great news just in from Dan Ody:

LOST SPEEDWAYS IV – SARATOGA AUTO MUSEUM, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2008

Lost Speedways Four, another look at speedways no longer in existence, will be held in the Racing in New York gallery beginning at 1 pm. Visitors are also encouraged to bring photos, scrapbooks and other memorabilia for display in the Golub Gallery under the supervision of museum volunteers.

Erv Grant will recall drag racing at South Glens Falls and Fonda along with a quick look at other northeastern venues and what "state of the art" meant in the 1960’s.

Gary London will speak on racing in New York City at the Polo Grounds, Dexter Park, Weisglass Stadium and indoors at the Kingsbridge Armory.

Ken Gypson and Les King will discuss Carroll’s Grove, Altamont, Warrensburgh, Corinth, Granville, Schuylerville and Wilton.

Lew Boyd will highlight the New Yorkers who gained fame at Riverside Park in Agawam, MA, among them Gordon Ross, Lou Smith, Richie Evans, Les Ley and future New Yorker Rene Charland. He’ll also explore the effect cars from "The Park" had on New York speedways.

OLD SPEEDWAY IN SCHENECTADY N.Y.

I have been getting reports of an old track at Rt.7 and I-890 on the east side where Stadium Golf Course currently is. The only confirmed info I have is that Jack Johnsons father (Rollie) raced there and some other people, have heard of some old timers speak of this track. I am looking for more info on this track. Schenectady historians, libraries, or even Fire and Police Dept. retired people may have some info. Also archived aerial photos of buildings and locations may be on file with the City of Schenectady. Can anyone ask around in these areas?

I believe this track raced in the 1940s, jalopy style cars

Here is a 1995 Airview of the location with no apparent evendience of a track.

Re: Historic racing in the Capital District

I received an email from Sam Patterson this morning and in it he mentioned this:

Image

As an aside..I've always thought that white 1953/1954 Studebaker that sat atop the Malta Speedway in the 60's might have been my first car. I bought it in 1958, did some bodywork on it, repainted it white, then sold it in 1964 to someone in the saratoga area. The design was elegant. It consistently turns up in polls of automotive designers as one of the most beautiful production cars ever.

Sam

In the URL of the picture, it mentions Rene Charland. Anyone know where the car came from?

If that is in fact Rene Charlands car that was on the sign, I have movies of the same car racing at Daytona, but the car was gold in 1961-62

Dan, I just saw Bob Miller's thread on Dirt Track Digest regarding your recent tour of the old Victoria Speedway [Rt. 20 Guilderland]. I like the neat Video clip he shot as well.

Nice work. Wish I was there that day hanging with you guys. emoticon
