Re: Where and when was your first ice race!

1992, Oneida Lake (Sylvan Beach). CNYIRA event, I was driving a 1973 BMW 2002 that I was using for winter TSD rallies. It was one of those rare days when there was no snow at all on the lake. My studded Nokian tires were essentially useless, but Mike Ogren lent me some Menards on VW wheels, and I had a grand old time. Went out and bought my own set the next week.

Feb 2012 at Wells in my blue WRX wagon. Wasn't quick around the corners but won the dash for cash that year! Looking to come out this year again for some fun.

Okay Dave, now you've done it!
Mirror Lake in Lake Placid, January or February 1969, in a 1963 VW Bug, with Konis, but still the original 40 horse motor. Packed so much snow and ice in under the fenders I could barely drive the car home to Northville, where I was living then. I had a riot on the ice, passed a few people, got passed by a lot of people, and ice-raced Bugs pretty regularly in 1970 and 1971, at Lake George and Ballston Lake.
And I smile at who else has posted already, you (of course), Dick Vedder, Mike Kamm, Caleb Pocock (I have an FRS as my "track" car now), and, not least, my good buddy Karl Hughes, whose 2002 he mentions, I got to drive at a Hershey Hillclimb 'bout 10 years ago.
Yup, Dave, you really started it rolling this time. emoticon

Lake Algonquin February 12, 2006. SLS 1991 Miata. Jeff & Cliff Collins told me about it.
Had a blast that day, and recognized that ice racers operate on a unique plane in the motorsport world. The SL field was massive at that time, and I lost way many more places than I gained.
From there ice racing seemed like a no-brainer; what else are gearheads going to do during the winter?
I’ve raced in SLS, SLU, SLM, SS, and MM. The thing they all have in common: you always have someone to race! Isn't that what it's all about?
I’m always amazed by the job AMEC does taming the Adirondack lakes in some of the toughest conditions in North America, and putting together a top-notch racing series that accommodates almost any budget. A tip of the cap to you guys and gals.

February 1998-Round Lake
I think one of the first revamped "Rubber-to-Ice" races coordinated by Mike Kamm

1982 Saab 900 8v

Now that some time has past, happy to say that was first ever race (at the meager age of 14). So the racing addiction can be traced back to the nuts from AMEC!

Thanks...I think...

1/28/2012 Tupper Lake
After having a blast at several winter driving schools with the NEQ, I had to join AMEC and give it a try. On the way home, my cheeks hurt from so much grinning and laughing. I ran 5 out of 6 rounds in 2012 and all 5 rounds in 2013 before moving to New Mexico to be with family.
We’re back and I’m super excited to be coming to Wells on the 28th.
See you Sunday

1979, On my bosses pond behind his house (which was behind THE CONCORD FILLING STATION, one of the oldest gas stations in Ma) just offa rt 2. We would take a car out of our small junk yard, get em running and race, Good thing we had a fleet of tow trucks as we never checked how thick the ice was..... Rule #1...There were no rules....
